The ‘Israeli’ army said Thursday it carried out a military operation in southern Lebanon that resulted in the killing of Ali Hussein Mahmoud Mershed al-Jawhari, according to an official statement by army spokesperson Avichay Adraee.
Adraee said the operation was conducted in coordination with the ‘Israeli’ internal security agency Shin Bet and was based on what he described as “precise intelligence.” The strike reportedly took place in the al-Nassiriya area of Lebanon.
The army claimed al-Jawhari was a key operative within Iran-backed armed networks operating in the region.
Alleged role and military activity
According to the statement, al-Jawhari was among the most prominent members of Iran’s Quds Force operations unit, known as Unit 840. The ‘Israeli’ army alleged that he played a central role in planning and advancing military operations targeting ‘Israeli’ forces.
Adraee said the operative was involved in organizing activities against ‘Israel’ in both Syria and Lebanon over recent years, placing him under continuous surveillance by ‘Israeli’ security services.
Links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard
The ‘Israeli’ army said al-Jawhari operated directly under Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and received guidance and funding from Tehran. It accused him of taking part in military actions against ‘Israeli’ security forces as part of broader Iranian efforts in the region.
The statement described Unit 840 as responsible for directing and coordinating Iranian armed activity against ‘Israeli’ interests. It said the unit is led by Asghar Bagheri, with Mohammad Reza Ansari serving as his deputy.
Warning of continued operations
In closing, the ‘Israeli’ army warned that it and the Shin Bet are closely monitoring what it described as attempts by Iran or its allies to carry out attacks against ‘Israeli’ targets.
The statement said ‘Israel’ would continue military operations aimed at tracking and eliminating what it considers security threats targeting its territory or forces deployed along its borders.
