Following news of Reiner’s death, tributes poured in from across the entertainment and political worlds.
Actor and director Ben Stiller called Reiner “a kind caring person who was really really funny,” adding that he “made some of the most formative movies for my generation.”
Former President Barack Obama said he and former First Lady Michelle Obama were “heartbroken.”
“Beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people,” Obama said on X.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said Reiner had “made California a better place.”
US President Donald Trump, however, sparked backlash with remarks suggesting Reiner was responsible for his own death due to his criticism of Trump.
Trump claimed the Reiners had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession,” Trump wrote.
The comments drew condemnation from members of Trump’s own party, including Representative Thomas Massie, who called them “inappropriate and disrespectful.”
Reiner was known for his outspoken progressive views and had repeatedly warned that Trump posed an authoritarian threat.
