- UK MP Shockat Adam accused Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and the UK government of complicity in ‘Israel's’ genocide in Gaza.
- Adam criticized Lammy for allegedly dismissing the idea of sanctions against ‘Israel’ by saying it was "too expensive”.
UK MP Shokat Adam criticized Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy's position on the ‘Israeli’ assault on Gaza, accusing the UK government of complicity in what he described as ‘Israel's’ genocide in the region.
Adam, an independent MP representing Leicester South, highlighted parliamentary frustrations over claims that officials are "doing everything we can to stop this conflict [in Gaza]," calling such statements disingenuous amid ongoing violence – in statements in an address at the Your Party conference on November 30.
Adam zeroed in on a past exchange involving Lammy, who was then foreign secretary, when pressed on imposing economic sanctions against ‘Israel’ similar to those used against South Africa during the apartheid.
According to Adam, Lammy dismissed the idea, stating, “it is simply too expensive for this country to have economic sanctions against Israel.”
"Let me tell you, David, one of the biggest obstacles for the abolition of slavery was 'it was too damn expensive'," Adam said in his speech, referring to what he said was Lammy’s frequent references to his ancestry tied to slavery.
“The irony now that the child of somebody who was from slavery is saying 'it’s too expensive' is unbelievable!" he added.
Lammy's elevation to Deputy Prime Minister followed a cabinet reshuffle in September 2025, triggered by Angela Rayner's resignation.
As foreign secretary earlier in the year, Lammy faced repeated scrutiny over the UK's Gaza policy, including questions in Parliament about aid blockades and potential military support for ‘Israel’.
Adam, who won his seat on a pro-Palestine platform by defeating Labour's Jonathan Ashworth in 2024, has consistently opposed ‘Israeli’ actions and UK arms sales.
He was previously absent from a July 2024 Gaza vote due to a reported death threat.
