  • The Jordanian Airports Company (JAF) said it finalized all technical preparations to reopen Amman Civil Airport, making it ready to resume flight operations.
  • The airport is awaiting its final license from CARC (expected by month's end) to begin receiving flights from the Middle East and Europe, serving as a backup hub to Queen Alia International Airport.

The state-owned Jordanian Airports Company (JAC) said it finalized all necessary technical preparations for the reopening of the Amman Civil Airport (Marka International Airport), the company’s Director General Ahmad Al-Azzam confirmed Saturday.

Final License and Flight Scheduling Expected

Al-Azzam stated that the company is now awaiting the necessary licensing from the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) to officially kick off flights at the airport,

JAC said it expects to receive these licenses in days – by the end of this month.

The actual commencement of flights following licensing, he added, is contingent upon the airlines scheduling their flights to Amman Civil Airport.

Al-Azzam noted that the airport is expected to receive flights arriving from countries across the Middle East and Europe.

Relief for Main Hub

Al-Azzam confirmed that the airport’s annual capacity is one million passengers. He emphasized that the facility will serve as an important complement (or back-up hub) to the main Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), aiming to relieve pressure from the primary airport by absorbing some of the passenger and aircraft traffic.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan issued directives to reactivate the Amman Civil Airport (Marka) to receive commercial flight operations before the end of the current year, following a closure that lasted for several years.

The Jordanian Airports Company worked on several projects to meet international requirements for operational safety and the resumption of commercial flights; most notably:

  • The rehabilitation of the runway area and its adjacent zones.
  • The complete renovation and modernization of the departures hall.
  • The upgrading of equipment necessary for baggage and passenger transfer in both the arrivals and departures halls.
