- Fátima Bosch of Mexico crowned Miss Universe 2025 amid an unusually turbulent pageant season.
- Organizers faced accusations of misconduct, rigging, and public disputes between Thai and Mexican leadership.
Mexico’s Fátima Bosch was crowned Miss Universe 2025 in Thailand on Friday, bringing a turbulent and controversy-heavy pageant season to a close.
The 25-year-old secured the title amid an atmosphere shaped by public disputes, resignations, and accusations that put the global competition under unusual scrutiny.
Bosch became a central figure in the drama weeks before the final show, when she walked out of a pageant event after organizer Nawat Itsaragrasil reprimanded her in front of dozens of contestants for not posting promotional material. Witnesses said he also threatened to remove any contestant who showed solidarity with her. The Miss Universe Organization later denounced his conduct as “malicious,” prompting Mexican businessman Raul Rocha, who runs the organization, to tell the Thai producer to “stop.”
The incident triggered a wave of interventions from international executives, and within a week two judges pulled out, including Lebanese-French musician Omar Harfouch, who accused organizers of manipulating the results, alleging an “impromptu jury” had pre-selected finalists. Hours later, former footballer Claude Makelele also resigned, citing “unforeseen personal reasons.” Miss Universe leadership dismissed Harfouch’s claims, insisting “no external group has been authorised to evaluate delegates or select finalists,” and said he may have confused the main judging process with the Beyond the Crown initiative, which operates separately.
Despite the internal turmoil, the competition moved forward, with Thailand’s Praveenar Singh finishing as first runner-up. The rest of the top five included Venezuela, the Philippines, and Côte d’Ivoire. Thailand, hosting Miss Universe for the fourth time, had been considered a strong contender by fans throughout the season.
The week was further disrupted when Miss Jamaica slipped during the preliminary evening gown round and had to be taken out on a stretcher. She remains hospitalized but is recovering, organizers said.
