  • The US is reportedly planning to construct a large, $500 million military base in southern ‘Israel’ near the Gaza border.
  • The proposed facility is intended to house thousands of multinational troops.

The United States is reportedly planning to construct a large military base in southern ‘Israel’ near the Gaza border, which allegedly aims at supporting international forces tasked with maintaining the fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

According to Hebrew news outlets Ynet and Shomrim, the facility would represent a significant escalation in US involvement in the region, marking the first major American military installation in ‘Israel’.

The proposed base is estimated to cost around $500 million and could house several thousand troops from various nations.

Bloomberg reported that the US military is exploring a temporary, self-sustaining structure capable of accommodating up to 10,000 personnel, including 10,000 square feet of office space, for an initial 12-month period.

The Navy has issued a Request for Information to contractors for cost estimates, indicating the project is in early exploratory stages.

Its primary purpose would be to facilitate operations by an international stabilization force monitoring the ceasefire between ‘Israel’ and Hamas, overseeing humanitarian aid, and supporting post-war governance in Gaza - according to the reports.

This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza peace plan, which envisions a UN-endorsed international force to ensure long-term calm.

Some critics described the move as part of a “US takeover” of Gaza, potentially enabling resource extraction and further entrenching American military presence in the Middle East.

Trump’s plan

On Monday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution handing oversight of humanitarian aid and overall governance in Gaza to a newly formed entity, further paving the way for multinational involvement.

The plan has garnered support from several Arab states and the Palestinian Authority, though China and Russia abstained from the vote.

A related development is the existing US-led Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) in Kiryat Gat, ‘Israel’, about 20 miles from Gaza.

This repurposed warehouse currently hosts around 150 US troops under Central Command (CENTCOM), along with staff from over 40 countries, coordinating aid and security efforts without entering Gaza itself.
