A tragic incident in Gaza claimed the life of a Palestinian child after an unexploded ordnance left behind by the 'Israeli' army detonated in the southern city of Khan Younis, according to Palestinian media reports cited by Anadolu on Saturday.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA confirmed the explosion, noting that the dangers posed by remnants of past 'Israeli' attacks continue to threaten civilians, even after a ceasefire halted active hostilities.

Authorities estimate that approximately 20,000 unexploded shells and rockets remain scattered throughout the Gaza Strip, and clearing them could take 20 to 30 years. The situation is further complicated as demining equipment and resources have not been permitted entry into the area, hampering clearance efforts.

Gaza has effectively become an open-air minefield, posing a particularly grave threat to children, who are often unaware of the deadly risks these munitions present. Officials have repeatedly warned that the remnants of war continue to claim lives long after the cessation of military operations.
