A minor chemical accident at a private school in Amman on Sunday morning led to the evacuation and hospitalization of several students and teachers, officials confirmed.
According to a source, the incident occurred when a chemical substance fell onto the floor of the school’s science laboratory, releasing ammonia gas. Several students inhaled the gas, causing respiratory irritation.
The Ministry of Education confirmed that all students and teachers taken to hospital were discharged in good health, except for one student who was kept under observation due to pre-existing asthma. Education Minister Dr. Azmi Mahafzah personally checked on the affected individuals.
Precautionary evacuation and treatment
As a precaution, the school evacuated all remaining students to ensure their safety. A total of 14 students and six teachers received medical treatment at the hospital.
Ministry officials, including Dr. Tareq Al-Tarawneh, Director of Private Education, oversaw the entry and exit of staff and students from the hospital and monitored their condition.

In a statement, Minister Mahafzah praised the Civil Defense teams for their rapid and professional response, noting their efficiency in evacuating and treating those affected.
The Ministry described the leak as “minor” and emphasized that swift action prevented further harm.
