  • Explosions at a North Jakarta school mosque wounded 96 people during Friday prayers.
  • Police have identified one student suspect but are not ruling out others.
  • Investigators are examining the suspect’s family, social media, and home.
  • Nearly 30 victims remain hospitalized, including two in critical condition.

Indonesian authorities are investigating a student suspected of involvement in explosions that injured nearly 100 people at a school mosque in North Jakarta, the national police said Saturday.

The blasts occurred Friday as worshippers gathered for prayer, causing panic and chaos.

“There's writing, and there is also evidence of powder that could potentially have caused an explosion,” said National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, speaking to Kompas TV.

Police have so far identified one student suspect, who was wounded in the explosions, but the possibility of additional suspects has not been ruled out. Investigators are also reviewing the suspect’s family background and social media activity as part of their probe.

Authorities revised the casualty count to 96 injured, up from an initial 54. Twenty-nine victims remain hospitalized, with at least two in intensive care.

Mayndra Eka Wardhana, spokesman for the counter-terrorism unit Densus 88, confirmed that investigators had searched the suspect’s home while continuing to probe the motive behind the incident.

Witnesses described confusion in the immediate aftermath. Kinza Ghaisan Rayyan, a 17-year-old student, told Agence France-Presse (AFP), “At first we thought it came from some electronic equipment, maybe the sound system... but it turned out the explosion came from under the prayer mat.”
