Ahead of the official opening of the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, dozens of world leaders are meeting today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) in Belém, Brazil, to discuss urgent measures to curb global warming.

Among the participants are German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with senior officials from the European Union and the United Nations, according to the German Press Agency (DPA).

Brazil, which is hosting the summit, hopes the meeting will build momentum for the two-week COP30 conference, set to officially begin on Monday with tens of thousands of delegates from around 200 countries.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has described the event as the “COP of truth,” said the conference aims to deliver tangible results.

The White House said the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump does not plan to send a high-level delegation to COP30.

On Thursday, leaders are expected to launch a new multibillion-dollar fund to protect tropical forests — often called the planet’s “green lungs.”
