Brazil formally joins ‘Israel’ genocide case at ICJ
Brazil has officially joined the lawsuit filed by South Africa against ‘Israel’ at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accuses ‘Israel’ of committing a genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Brazil filed a declaration of intervention at the ICJ, according to an announcement by the court on Friday.
Brazil's decision is the culmination of a series of sharp and repeated criticisms from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
He previously described the war on Gaza as "genocide" and famously likened them to the "Holocaust," which triggered a diplomatic crisis with ‘Israel’.
With its entry, Brazil joins a growing list of nations supporting the lawsuit South Africa filed in late 2023. Other countries that have joined the case include Colombia, Chile, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, and Libya.
The ICJ had previously issued provisional orders demanding that ‘Israel’ take immediate measures to prevent acts of genocide and ensure humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip.
