Outrage in 'Israel' over Yair Netanyahu’s nomination to top Zionist post

Two 'Israeli' opposition leaders announced on Thursday their rejection of the nomination of Yair Netanyahu, the son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for a position within the World Zionist Organization (WZO), amid mounting accusations of corruption against the Netanyahu family.

According to 'Israel’s' public broadcaster on Wednesday evening, Yair has been nominated to head the organization’s Diaspora and Media Department. The position reportedly carries a salary and benefits equivalent to those of a government minister.

The proposal was part of a political deal suggested by Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar of Netanyahu’s Likud party, which had received backing from opposition parties that said they had approved the arrangement without knowing who the candidates were, according to the broadcaster.

After the news broke, a final decision on the appointment was postponed, sparking shock in both the Knesset and the WZO.

- An unwelcome surprise -

Board member Gusti Yehoshua Braverman described the development as an “unpleasant surprise,” according to the public broadcaster on Thursday.

She added that national institutions are not the place for political or personal appointments, stressing that whoever fills the position should have experience in public and diplomatic work.

Braverman voiced her objection to Yair Netanyahu’s nomination, noting that he had previously attacked state institutions such as the military and the attorney general’s office, something she deemed “completely inappropriate.”

Opposition leader Yair Lapid also weighed in, writing on X Thursday, “Likud secretly tried to appoint Yair Netanyahu to a senior position in the World Zionist Organization with a ministerial salary.”

He continued, “The Yesh Atid party discovered this at the last moment, blew up the deal, and prevented the appointment. We will continue to fight corruption.”

Yair Golan, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, also denounced the move on X, saying that Yair Netanyahu “is a resentful man who has dedicated his life to destruction and division.” He added, “He does not deserve to represent the Jewish people or enjoy public status and money. We will not allow this to happen.”

The revelation of Yair’s nomination has added further pressure on his father, who is currently on trial for corruption charges, including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, offenses that could lead to imprisonment if convicted.

Internationally, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu on November 21, 2024, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Palestinians in Gaza.

On the other hand, Minister Zohar accused the opposition and media of conducting a personal witch-hunt against the Prime Minister and his family, claiming that Yair Netanyahu’s only goal is to “serve Zionist diplomacy in the diaspora,” according to the broadcaster.
