Sudan’s UN envoy accuses Rapid Support Forces of ethnic cleansing in Al-Fashir
Sudan’s envoy to the United Nations on Wednesday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing “barbaric acts and genocide” in the city of Al-Fashir, describing the city as “a new symbol of the humanitarian tragedy caused by this militia.”
Speaking during a UN Security Council session, the diplomat said the attacks in Al-Fashir represented “a continuation of a systematic pattern of ethnic cleansing,” revealing that nearly 500 patients were killed inside the Saudi Hospital in the city due to repeated assaults carried out by RSF forces.
Ethnic Cleansing and Systematic Crimes
The Sudanese envoy described the RSF as “a natural extension of the Janjaweed militia with no legitimacy,” adding that the group “derives its power from the plundered gold of Darfur and employs mercenaries from neighboring countries and Latin America.”
He further stated that civilians in Al-Fashir were either massacred within the city or killed while fleeing, accusing the RSF of using “starvation as a weapon of war,” while criticizing the lack of an effective international response.
Call for Action from the Security Council
The Sudanese representative urged the UN Security Council to “designate the Rapid Support Forces as a terrorist organization” and to demand its “immediate withdrawal from Al-Fashir.” He also called for sanctions against its regional and international financiers and supporters.
He emphasized the need to implement all Security Council resolutions related to Sudan and demanded the disarmament of the RSF, as well as an end to its military and financial backing.
Sudanese Government Commits to International Law
The envoy reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to international humanitarian law and civilian protection, highlighting Khartoum’s cooperation with the UN in implementing all truces and international resolutions, and its efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to those in conflict-affected areas.
