In a major battlefield development in Sudan’s Darfur region, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced Sunday that they have taken full control of the Sudanese army’s strategic 6th Infantry Division headquarters in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.

The advance comes after weeks of siege and intense fighting. Military sources confirmed that army forces have withdrawn from the base, describing the move as “tactical.”

El Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the vast Darfur region, witnessed a major military shift as the RSF claimed control over one of the army’s most significant positions in the area.

RSF declares “full control”

In an official statement, the RSF confirmed that its forces had “taken full control of the 6th Infantry Division in El Fasher, North Darfur.”

The capture of the base, which had withstood repeated assaults for months, marks a major blow to the army’s presence in Darfur. It gives the RSF both strategic and psychological momentum and could pave the way for near-total control over all five Darfur states.

Sudanese army: withdrawal “for tactical reasons”

The Sudanese army, meanwhile, presented a different version of events. Military sources quoted by outlets including Al Jazeera acknowledged the withdrawal after “intense fighting.”

A senior army source later said that the troops had “withdrawn from certain positions in El Fasher for tactical reasons” — a military term typically referring to redeployment or avoiding unnecessary losses under heavy attack.

Fierce clashes preceded takeover

The RSF’s announcement follows weeks of fierce fighting. Earlier on Sunday, military sources reported “heavy clashes between the army and RSF around the 6th Infantry Division headquarters in central El Fasher.”

The city, home to millions of displaced civilians, has been under siege and continuous artillery and air bombardment, with the UN and humanitarian groups warning of an imminent catastrophe for civilians trapped in one of Sudan’s fiercest battlefronts.
