The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor released on Wednesday what it described as “shocking and horrifying” preliminary statistics, revealing the scale of what it called the “genocide committed by Israel” in the Gaza Strip over the past two years since October 7, 2023.

The international rights organization said the impact of the crime has spared no one, documenting the killing, injury, or detention of more than 270,000 people - nearly 12% of Gaza’s total population - in what it described as an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.

Human toll: 75,000 killed, 173,000 injured

According to the report:

  • 75,190 Palestinians have been killed.
  • Civilians account for 90% of all fatalities (70,248 people).
  • 21,310 children and 13,987 women were among the dead.
  • Around 173,200 Palestinians have been injured, tens of thousands of whom now suffer from permanent disabilities.
  • 40,000 people, including 21,000 children, have sustained lifelong or long-term disabilities.
  • Approximately 45,600 children have lost one or both parents.

Detention and systematic torture

The report said that those who survived bombardments were not spared detention or abuse:

  • Around 12,000 Palestinians from Gaza were arrested during the war, with 2,700 still detained or forcibly disappeared.
  • The Monitor documented 42 different forms of torture, including rape, sexual assault, electric shocks, and executions under torture.

Starvation as a weapon of war

The report accused ‘Israel’ of continuing to use starvation as a weapon:

  • 482 Palestinians, including 160 children, have died due to malnutrition and dehydration.
  • 100% of Gaza’s population faces severe food insecurity.
  • Water access has collapsed by 98% due to infrastructure destruction.
  • ‘Israel’ reportedly blocked or obstructed 80% of international humanitarian missions to northern Gaza.

Targeted killing of professionals

The report highlighted the systematic targeting of key societal figures:

  • 1,701 healthcare workers killed, including 194 doctors.
  • 255 journalists killed.
  • 140 civil defense workers killed.
  • 1,000 education professionals killed, including 800 teachers and 200 university professors.

Widespread destruction and mass displacement

The Monitor said the Gaza Strip has suffered near-total destruction:

  • 99% of residents have been displaced at least once.
  • 80% of all buildings have been completely destroyed or severely damaged.
  • 555,000 housing units have been damaged or demolished.
  • 95% of schools and universities and 100% of hospitals have been hit.
  • 890 mosques, 3 churches, and 205 historical sites have been damaged or destroyed.

The entire population has endured psychological trauma, with widespread signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, described as a case of “collective psychological exhaustion.”

Ongoing violations despite ceasefire

The Euro-Med Monitor said that despite the ceasefire that came into effect on October 11, ‘Israel’ committed 47 violations, killing 73 Palestinians in scattered attacks.

The organization stressed that the ceasefire “does not mean an end to the genocide,” which continues through the siege and severe restrictions on aid and movement.

The report concluded by urging the international community to act immediately to end the Israeli occupation, hold ‘Israeli’ officials accountable, and impose comprehensive sanctions and a full arms embargo on ‘Israel’.
