Two killed in Gaza as another 'Israeli' ceasefire breach reported
Palestinian media reported that two people were killed in an 'Israeli' strike south of Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Yunis, marking another breach of the fragile ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The incident follows a series of recent escalations. A few days ago, nine Gazans were reportedly killed in strikes carried out shortly after a ceasefire deal was signed in Egypt, under the auspices of international mediation. According to Quds News Network, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem condemned the attacks, stating, “The killing of civilians in Gaza this morning by 'Israeli' army shelling and gunfire is a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement.” He called on mediators and all parties to monitor 'Israel’s' actions and ensure compliance with the accord.
Casualties and Targeted Areas
The Palestinian Media Center reported that five civilians were killed after 'Israeli' quadcopter drones targeted residents inspecting their homes in Shujaiya, east of Gaza City. Additional casualties occurred in Al-Fukhari, east of Khan Yunis, where one civilian was killed and another injured in a similar drone strike.
Background on the Ceasefire
The current ceasefire, initially reached last Thursday, aimed to halt hostilities and included the release of several captives during its first phase, which took effect on Friday. Despite the initial progress, tensions remain high, and disagreements over the implementation of subsequent phases have emerged.
The previous ceasefire, established in January, collapsed on March 1 amid disputes over next steps. Hamas had sought to move to phase two, which would involve a full 'Israeli' withdrawal from Gaza and the release of all captives.
'Israel', however, pushed to extend phase one without committing to a cessation of hostilities or withdrawal of forces.
