FIFA hints at postponing 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia
FIFA may be considering a major overhaul of the World Cup calendar, signaling a potential shift away from the traditional summer slot.
President Gianni Infantino suggested at the EFC Congress that future tournaments could take place at different times of the year to accommodate climate and global scheduling needs.
“We have already looked into the details and we discuss it all the time. Even in Europe, playing in July can be very complicated due to intense heat. June, which is actually perfect for football, isn’t being fully utilized,” Infantino said.
Reports indicate that the 2034 World Cup, set to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, could be held mid-season or even postponed to January–February 2035. The proposed shift is intended to avoid conflict with Ramadan, which will occur between November and December 2034.
While no final decision has been made, FIFA’s discussions highlight a willingness to adapt the sport to climate conditions, cultural considerations, and the broader international schedule.
