The Trump administration has approved USD 230 million in security assistance for Lebanon, a move that comes despite the administration's broader policy of slashing foreign aid programs and its "America First" agenda, sources in Washington and Beirut say.

The funding is reportedly intended to bolster Lebanon's military and internal security as they push to disarm Hezbollah, was released just days before the end of Washington’s fiscal year on September 30.

According to sources in Washington and Beirut familiar with the decision, the aid package includes USD 190 million for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and USD 40 million for the Internal Security Forces (ISF). The funding is viewed as crucial for a small nation like Lebanon, particularly in its efforts to stabilize the country and counter the influence of militant groups.

A Democratic US congressional aide, spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized the significance of the funds, stating, "For a small country like Lebanon, that’s really, really significant." The aide added that the timing of the release, just before the fiscal year deadline, suggests a strategic push to get the funds allocated despite the administration's general stance on foreign aid.

Strategic Importance Amidst Hezbollah Concerns

The aid package highlights the Trump administration's complex foreign policy approach, balancing its "America First" rhetoric with strategic interests in the Middle East.

While the administration has cut billions in foreign assistance globally, it has historically viewed Lebanon's security forces as a vital bulwark against Hezbollah.

The US State Department did not respond to requests for comment regarding the funding at the time of the reports.
