'Israeli' drone strike kills two in eastern Lebanon
An 'Israeli' strike on the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek killed at least two people on Wednesday, Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that the attack was carried out by “an Israeli drone.” 'Israel' regularly conducts strikes in Lebanon, citing the targeting of Hezbollah members, despite a ceasefire that ended the most recent conflict between the two in November.
Baalbek, a city with a history spanning millennia and home to UNESCO-listed Roman temples, is located in the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border, a known Hezbollah stronghold.
Under pressure from the United States and amid concerns over further 'Israeli' operations, the Lebanese government has announced efforts to disarm Hezbollah. Once dominant in Lebanese politics and considered more heavily armed than the national military, Hezbollah’s capabilities were significantly reduced following the war with 'Israel'.
Beirut has mandated that the Lebanese army complete the disarmament of Hezbollah in areas near the 'Israeli' border within three months.
