Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday accused Russia of attempting to expand the scope of the war by launching drones that breached the airspace of Romania and Poland.

In a post on X, Zelensky said a Russian drone entered 10 kilometers into Romanian airspace, prompting the country to scramble fighter jets in pursuit.

He added that Russian drones flew throughout the day over various parts of Ukraine along the border with Belarus, accusing Moscow of using Belarusian airspace to stage incursions into northern Ukraine.

Zelensky stressed that Russia must face consequences for its actions through tougher sanctions, while also noting that he had proposed to Ukraine’s partners the creation of a defense system to counter Russian drones and ballistic missiles.

The incident follows reports last week that Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace, sparking strong condemnation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the incursion as “the most serious violation of European airspace” by Moscow since the start of the war more than three and a half years ago.
