Russia hits Ukraine with biggest airstrike of war on Kyiv, gov't building hit
Russia said on Sunday it had targeted only military sites and related infrastructure in a massive overnight strike on Ukraine, even as a government building in central Kyiv was set ablaze and dozens of civilian structures were damaged.
In a statement, Russia’s defence ministry said its forces “struck sites of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and transport infrastructure” during the combined drone and missile attack.
Ukrainian officials reported that at least three people, including an infant, were killed in the capital, while 18 others were wounded. Local media said dozens of residential and office buildings caught fire across Kyiv, including the main government building in the city center.
Authorities described the assault as the largest air attack on Ukraine since the start of the war, with waves of drones and missiles pounding the capital throughout the night.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the strikes, calling them a “deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war.” Writing on X, he urged Kyiv’s allies to accelerate efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences: “Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have already begun long ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war.”
