Historic UN vote backs Palestinian sovereignty
The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution endorsing the “New York Declaration,” which calls for the implementation of a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders.
The resolution was passed following a vote by the General Assembly, signaling growing international support for efforts to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the 'Israeli' war on Palestine.
The General Assembly emphasized that this solution should proceed through a political process leading to a sovereign Palestinian state.
The vote on the resolution saw 142 countries in favor, 12 against, and 10 abstentions.
"The Declaration, circulated at a high-level international conference held from 28 to 30 July, sets out an action-oriented pathway towards a peaceful settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the realization of the two-State solution — the vision of an independent State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security, based on the pre-1967 borders," A UN statement said.
The New York Declaration also calls for an “immediate end to the war in Gaza” and a “fair, peaceful, and lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the full implementation of a two-state solution.”
In addition, the declaration proposes deploying a temporary international mission in Gaza under a UN Security Council mandate to protect Palestinian civilians, support the transfer of security responsibilities to the Palestinian Authority, and provide security guarantees for both Palestine and Tel Aviv.
While around three-quarters of the UN’s 193 member states already recognize the Palestinian state declared in 1988, there are growing concerns that the ongoing war in Gaza and the expansion of settlements in the West Bank undermine the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state, especially given statements from 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that “there will be no Palestinian state.”
