Iran executed Mehran Bahramian on Saturday for allegedly killing a security officer during unrest following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency.

Mizan reported that Bahramian participated in an attack on a security forces vehicle in the Semirom area of Isfahan province, resulting in the shooting death of officer Mohsen Rezai in December 2022. Several others were reportedly injured.

The execution brings to at least 10 the number of people hanged in connection with the protests that erupted after Amini, 22, died in custody of Iran’s morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules. Her death sparked nationwide demonstrations under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

Rights groups said Bahramian’s brother, Fazel, was also sentenced to death on the same charges, while another brother, Morad, was killed by security forces during the 2022 protests. Amnesty International has criticized Iranian authorities for routinely using confessions obtained under torture, solitary confinement, and threats against detainees and their families as evidence in court.
