Canadian photojournalist Valerie Zink has resigned from Reuters, publicly condemning the news agency for what she calls its role in "justifying and enabling the systematic killing of journalists in Gaza".

Zink, a stringer who had worked with Reuters for eight years, announced her departure on social media by sharing a photograph of her torn press badge, an act she described as a rejection of her affiliation due to "deep shame and grief".

In a statement, Zink argued that Reuters' reporting, along with other Western media outlets, has contributed to the conditions under which an unprecedented number of journalists have been killed in the conflict.

She cited the case of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, whose work had won a Pulitzer Prize for Reuters but was reportedly killed after being placed on a "hit list" by ‘Israeli’ forces.

Zink criticized Reuters for allegedly publishing ‘Israel's’ "entirely baseless claim" that al-Sharif was a "Hamas operative" without independent verification.

She also highlighted the death of her colleague, Reuters cameraman Hossam al-Masri, who was among at least 20 people killed in an ‘Israeli’ strike on Nasser Hospital.

Zink described the incident as a "double tap" attack, a term for a second strike that targets first responders and journalists.

Zink echoed the broader critique that Western media has "served as a conveyor belt for Israeli propaganda, sanitising war crimes and dehumanising victims".

She stated that her future work will be redirected to honor the journalists of Gaza, whom she called "the bravest and best to ever live".

As of the time of this report, Reuters has not issued a public comment regarding Zink's resignation.
