'Israeli' army officials said on Thursday they expect Hamas to carry out further ambushes against forces in the Gaza Strip with the aim of capturing soldiers, following a surprise attack on troops from the Kfir Brigade in Khan Younis on Wednesday.

According to the Jerusalem Post, officials from the army’s Southern Command said the attack demonstrated that Hamas remains capable of conducting organized operations, contrary to assessments by some officers who believed the group was no longer operating in a structured manner in areas seized by 'Israel' in Gaza.

The report said Hamas fighters emerged from tunnels and clashed with Israeli soldiers near Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Wednesday.

A source in the Southern Command told the newspaper that the assailants in the Khan Younis attack had planned to capture 'Israeli' soldiers, adding: “Hamas has escalated the level of its operations... and we are preparing for more incidents.”
