Russia urges caution in nuclear 'rhetoric' after Trump comments

Russia on Monday urged restraint after US President Donald Trump said he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to a social media exchange with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

“Russia is very attentive to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation. And we believe that everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, including AFP.

Trump revealed on Friday that he had moved the submarines to an unspecified location “in the region,” but did not clarify whether they were nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed. The Pentagon has not commented on their status or whereabouts.

The move came after a heated online exchange with Medvedev, who had made remarks sharply critical of US policy.

Despite the tension, the Kremlin struck a more conciliatory tone regarding a planned visit to Moscow by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.

“We are always happy to see Mr. Witkoff in Moscow,” Peskov said. “We consider such contact important, substantial, and helpful,” he added, noting that a meeting with President Vladimir Putin was possible.

Separately, Trump has issued an ultimatum to the Kremlin, demanding concrete steps to end the war in Ukraine by the end of the week or face a new round of sanctions. While details remain vague, Trump has previously hinted at “secondary tariffs” that could target nations maintaining trade with Russia—such as China and India. Analysts warn such measures could escalate economic tensions globally.

The latest developments underscore the growing friction between Washington and Moscow as diplomatic channels remain limited and military signals intensify.
