Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement that the United Kingdom will officially recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

The ministry called the declaration “a step in the right direction” toward implementing the two-state solution and ending the Israeli Occupation.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Dr. Sufian Qudah praised the British move as a significant stand against efforts to deny the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination. He said the decision contributes to the realization of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil.

Qudah added that the UK’s announcement aligns with international efforts to recognize a sovereign Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

He also highlighted the importance of the ongoing high-level international conference in New York, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, which seeks to rally global support for further recognition of Palestinian statehood based on the two-state solution.

Qudah reaffirmed Jordan’s firm position in continuing to work with regional allies and international partners to support the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, self-determination, and the establishment of an independent state.
