Palestinian teacher and activist Awdah Hathaleen was shot and killed on Monday by an 'Israeli' settler in the village of Umm al-Khair near Hebron, local officials said.

Hathaleen, known for his role in the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was a prominent voice against forced displacement in Masafer Yatta.

Witnesses say the attack began when a settler-operated bulldozer destroyed trees and property in the village. After residents confronted the driver, settler Yinon Levi, who is under UK and EU sanctions but removed from the list by Donald Trump, opened fire. Hathaleen was standing near the community center when he was fatally shot in the chest.

Following the shooting, witnesses say the settler, Yinon Levi, pointed toward Hathaleen’s family members and ordered soldiers to arrest them. Four relatives were detained and remain in custody, while Levi, the alleged shooter, was later released to house arrest, according to witnesses.

'Israeli' authorities often apply separate legal systems in the occupied West Bank: Palestinians are tried under military law, while settlers fall under civilian jurisdiction. Critics, including No Other Land co-director Yuval Abraham, say this system routinely punishes victims while shielding perpetrators from accountability.

Basel Adra, co-director of "No Other Land", mourned Hathaleen's death, writing: "I can hardly believe it. My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening. He was standing in front of the community center in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time."

The killing comes amid rising violence in the occupied West Bank, where over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by 'Israeli' soldiers and settlers since October 2023.
