Syrian media reveals details of US-brokered “Israel” ceasefire amid Sweida clashes
The United States said early Saturday that it had negotiated a ceasefire between “Israel” and Syria's government as new clashes erupted in Syria's Druze heartland following violence that prompted massive “Israeli” strikes.
Tom Barrack, the US pointman on Syria, said in the early hours of Saturday in the Middle East that Sharaa and “Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "have agreed to a ceasefire" negotiated by the United States.
Barrack, who is US ambassador to Ankara, said the deal was backed by Turkey, a key supporter of Sharaa, as well as neighbouring Jordan.
"We call upon Druze, Bedouins and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbours," he wrote on X.
The Syrian Health Ministry has reported that 260 people were killed and 1,698 injured during the recent events in Sweida.
According to Syrian media, Syrian public security forces began moving towards Sweida city this morning to implement the agreement and enforce security.
The agreement includes several key provisions, as reported by local media outlets:
- The entry of state administrative and security institutions into Sweida province.
- The integration of local faction members into official security agencies.
- The surrender of heavy and medium weapons by Druze and Bedouin groups.
- The integration of members of the Druze community into the upcoming political process.
- Securing safe passages for those wishing to leave Sweida who reject the agreement.
- Accountability for perpetrators of violations from both sides in accordance with Syrian law.
- Assigning local faction members to cooperate with security units to maintain security in Sweida.
