Ceasefire reached in Syria; Key terms revealed

Syria’s Interior Ministry announced a detailed ceasefire agreement in Sweida on Wednesday, following recent clashes in the southern province.

According to state news agency SANA, the deal was reached between the Syrian government and local Druze leaders, and includes full reintegration of Sweida into the Syrian state.

Key points of the agreement include:

  • Immediate and complete cessation of all military operations and hostilities.
  • Formation of a joint monitoring committee including government and local Druze representatives to oversee implementation.
  • Deployment of internal security and police forces, alongside local police recruits from Sweida, to protect the city.
  • Appointment of competent and trusted officers from Sweida to lead local security efforts.
  • Protection of homes and private property, with a ban on violations or damage.
  • Regulation of heavy weapons in coordination with the Interior and Defense Ministries and local community leaders, respecting Sweida’s social and cultural identity.
  • Full reintegration of Sweida under Syrian state sovereignty and restoration of state institutions.
  • Reactivation of all public services and institutions in Sweida in accordance with Syrian law.
  • Guarantee of equal rights and services for all citizens in Sweida to promote civil peace.
  • Formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate recent crimes and violations, compensate victims, and ensure justice.
  • State control of the Damascus–Sweida road to ensure safe travel.
  • Immediate provision of essential services, including water, electricity, fuel, and healthcare.
  • Immediate release of detainees and clarification of the fate of missing persons.
  • Creation of a joint committee to follow up on implementation.

In a video released by state media, Druze spiritual leader Youssef Jarboua confirmed that the agreement was reached with the Syrian government and would take effect immediately. He emphasized the shared commitment to restoring security and unity.

Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa said the state had shown significant flexibility to reach a peaceful solution, but had been met with provocations and violations. He stressed that the state has the right to maintain control over its territory and that the people of Sweida are an integral part of the nation.
