A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported. A tsunami warning center, however, stated there was no threat of a tsunami.

The quake hit around 12:49 p.m. local time (05:49 GMT) at a depth of 80 kilometers and approximately 177 kilometers west of Tual city in Indonesia's eastern Maluku province.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami threat was posed by the tremor. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago, experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

In January 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed more than 100 people in Indonesia.

In 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Palu, Sulawesi, left more than 2,200 dead.

The deadliest disaster occurred in 2004, when a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia alone.
