‘Israeli’ military blames ‘technical error’ for deadly strike on children collecting water
At least 10 Palestinians, including six children, were killed in an 'Israeli' airstrike on a water collection point in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, local health officials said Sunday.
Another 17 people were wounded in the strike, according to Dr. Ahmed Abu Saifan, an emergency physician at Al Awda Hospital, which received the casualties.
The 'Israeli' military acknowledged it was responsible for the strike but said the missile missed its intended target due to a “technical error.” The Israel Occupation Forces (IOF) said the strike was aimed at a member of Islamic Jihad, but the munition landed “dozens of meters from the target.”
“The incident is under review,” the IDF said in a statement, adding that it “works to mitigate harm to uninvolved civilians as much as possible” and “regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians.”
Officials at Al Awda Hospital confirmed receiving the bodies of 10 victims and said six of them were children.
Residents described a horrific scene. Ramadan Nassar, a local resident, said about 20 children and 14 adults had lined up in the area Sunday morning to collect water—a scarce resource in Gaza amid the ongoing war.
“When the strike happened, people ran. Some were hit while running, and others collapsed on the ground, severely wounded,” he said.
The Nuseirat camp, like much of Gaza, has been struggling with critical shortages of water, food, and medical supplies amid ongoing 'Israeli' military operations.
