At least 10 people have been killed in flash floods triggered by torrential rainfall in the southern US state of Texas, authorities confirmed Friday.

Heavy rains struck the city of San Antonio on Thursday morning, causing sudden flooding that swept vehicles into a nearby river, according to local broadcaster KENS 5.

By midday Friday, the city reported 10 fatalities linked to the flooding.

Emergency crews have carried out more than 70 water rescues since the flooding began, officials said.

Rescue teams in San Antonio are still searching for at least four more possible victims, KENS 5 reported.

“Our hearts are with the families of those we’ve lost to this week’s flash floods and the families who continue searching for their loved ones,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg wrote in a post on X.

Scientists say climate change driven by fossil fuel emissions is increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall.
