Jordan becomes first country to host NATO liaison office in Middle East
Jordan and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) signed an agreement Thursday to establish a NATO diplomatic liaison office in the Jordanian capital Amman.
The agreement was signed by Jordan’s ambassador to NATO, Yousef Bataineh, and NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, during an official ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
The agreement aims to enhance diplomatic engagement and political dialogue between the Kingdom and the alliance.
It is also designed to expand support and partnership programs for Jordan, particularly in capacity building, counterterrorism, crisis management, cybersecurity, civil protection, scientific cooperation, and climate change.
Ambassador Bataineh described the signing as a significant milestone in the decades-long strategic partnership between Jordan and NATO, adding that selecting Amman as the site of NATO’s first liaison office in the region underscores the country’s central role in promoting peace, security, and stability.
Colomina praised the strong ties between NATO and Jordan, commending the Kingdom for hosting the office and highlighting its vital role in the region as a trusted NATO partner.
Jordan is one of NATO’s key non-member partners and benefits from numerous alliance programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing both defense and civil capacities and improving coordination in responding to regional and global challenges.
