The flotilla, which set sail to deliver humanitarian aid and draw attention to the blockade on Gaza, was traveling in international waters at the time of the sighting.

According to those on board, the drone appeared without warning and hovered at a low altitude for several minutes.

The surveillance drone has been identified as a Heron — an "Israeli"-manufactured unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) known for its long-range intelligence capabilities, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

Produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the Heron is a high-endurance drone that’s widely deployed by militaries, including those of "Israel" and Greece. Designed for border patrol, maritime surveillance, and intelligence operations, the aircraft can stay airborne for over 40 hours and reach altitudes of up to 35,000 feet. It is equipped with advanced sensors, including radar and high-resolution cameras, and is capable of transmitting real-time video across long distances via satellite.

Witnesses aboard the Madleen described the drone's presence as unsettling.

“Seeing this drone above the Madleen... is a chilling reminder of how tightly even peaceful missions are monitored,” one observer said.

The Heron’s appearance underscores the level of scrutiny applied to vessels approaching Gaza — even those carrying humanitarian cargo. While the drone did not engage with the ship, its silent presence served as a stark example of the region’s constant aerial surveillance, even in moments of humanitarian outreach.
