"Israel" arrests two citizens over spying for Iran
"Israeli" authorities announced Tuesday the arrest of two "Israeli" citizens accused of gathering intelligence for Iran near the residence of Defense Minister Israel Katz. The suspects, identified as 24-year-olds Roi Mizrachi and Almog Attias, were taken into custody in late April following a joint operation by "Israeli" police and the Shin Bet domestic security agency.
According to officials, the pair carried out surveillance activities in Kfar Ahim—Katz’s hometown—while operating “on behalf of Iran” and allegedly motivated by the promise of financial reward. The Shin Bet stated the men were aware they were working under Iranian direction and had received specific assignments in the area, including relocating what they believed was an explosive-laden bag.
One of the suspects reportedly used a newly purchased phone equipped with a “special app” to communicate with Iranian handlers.
In response to the latest case, Defense Minister Katz issued a firm statement, “I will not be deterred by any threat and will continue to fulfil my duty to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.” He also accused Tehran of “directly advancing terrorist activity and supporting terrorist organisations that act against Israeli leaders and against all citizens of the State of Israel.”
The arrests mark the latest in a series of espionage-related cases involving "Israeli" citizens since the war on Gaza began in October 2023. Recent incidents include an 18-year-old accused of spying on former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, as well as reports of individuals attempting to photograph military installations and even plot attacks on "Israeli" officials. Most of those arrested, authorities say, lacked formal training and were driven by financial hardship.
Indictments against Mizrachi and Attias are expected in the coming days.
