Trump expresses optimism over new ceasefire talks with Putin

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had just completed a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which both leaders agreed to immediately begin negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and ultimately ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In a statement on TruthSocial released shortly after the call, Trump expressed optimism about the tone and spirit of the discussion, describing it as “excellent.” He emphasized that the terms of any peace agreement would be negotiated directly between Russia and Ukraine, as only the two parties truly understand the complex details involved.

Trump also highlighted potential economic benefits following the conflict, noting Russia’s interest in “large-scale trade” with the United States once the “catastrophic bloodbath” is over. The president revealed that he had informed key international leaders about the development during a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Additionally, Trump noted that the Vatican, represented by Pope Leo, expressed strong interest in hosting the forthcoming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
