VIDEO: Two dead, 22 injured after Mexican navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge
A Mexican navy sailing ship, the ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with New York City’s iconic Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday night, killing two crew members and injuring 22 others, including two in critical condition, according to New York Mayor Eric Adams.
The tall ship lost power while navigating the East River at around 8:20 p.m., causing its masts to crash into the bridge. Video footage shared on social media showed the ship drifting backward as bystanders reacted with shock.
The vessel was carrying 277 passengers on a goodwill tour when the incident occurred. Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene, rescuing people from the water and providing medical treatment at a casualty collection point set up on Pier 16.
New York City police confirmed all injuries happened on board the ship, and no crew members were reported missing or overboard. After assessing the bridge for structural damage, officials reopened it to traffic.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mourned the loss of the two crew members on X, expressing condolences and noting the Mexican ambassador and consulate are supporting the navy.

At a press briefing, NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles explained the ship had departed Pier 17 heading out to sea when the pilot lost power, causing the collision.
The Brooklyn Bridge, a historic landmark and vital transport link, experiences heavy daily traffic. Authorities continue investigating the cause of the power loss and the crash.
