US, 'Israel' back Gaza aid plan to deliver aid without it being stolen by Hamas, says Rubio

During a diplomatic meeting in Antalya, Turkey, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed openness to any alternative plans that would successfully deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza without interference from Hamas.

The meeting took place with Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad Alshibani and Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Rubio told reporters he had spoken that day with 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and emphasized President Donald Trump’s belief that the people of Gaza deserve a better future than the one they have endured under Hamas rule.

“We see the elimination of Hamas as key to achieving peace,” Rubio said. “We are deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Israelis, with American support, have proposed a plan to deliver aid that prevents Hamas from diverting or stealing it. We’ve heard criticisms of this plan and are open to any better alternatives, but we want to ensure aid reaches the people, not Hamas.”

The Secretary of State refrained from discussing specific ongoing negotiations but acknowledged that countries like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey are involved in efforts to address the crisis.

Discussion on Syria, regional issues

Rubio described the current period as a “historic opportunity” for Syria while cautioning that the road to peace and stability remains long and complex. The US aims to support this path fully.

The meeting marks the first time a Syrian foreign minister met with a US secretary of state in 23 years — the last being in 2002.

Key topics included easing economic sanctions on Syria, viewed as vital to improving living conditions and supporting reconstruction efforts. Both sides stressed the importance of coordinating with Washington, Damascus, and Brussels to facilitate aid and investments.

Rubio also highlighted efforts by the Trump administration and European allies to reduce civilian suffering and promote a comprehensive negotiated resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

He noted that Trump awaits the outcomes of upcoming Russia-Ukraine talks before deciding on a potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the priority is ending the war regardless of credit.

Peace prospects, regional stability

In a notable statement, Rubio said new Syrian leadership has expressed a desire for peace with all neighbors, including 'Israel', and promised to work towards a pluralistic society.

“This marks a potential shift in the region’s dynamics,” Rubio added.
