Rashida Tlaib introduces resolution for US recognition of Nakba
On May 14, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the only Palestinian-American serving in the US Congress, reintroduced a resolution calling for the US to formally recognize the Nakba and affirm the rights of Palestinian refugees.
The Nakba never ended. Today we are witnessing the Israeli apartheid regime carry out genocide in Gaza. To mark 77 years of the ongoing Nakba against Palestinians I am introducing a resolution in Congress. pic.twitter.com/1geyvUdYn7

The resolution, H.Res. 409, coincides with the 77th anniversary of the Nakba—Arabic for "catastrophe"—which refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians during the establishment of the Israeli Occupation in 1948. Tlaib emphasized that the Nakba is not merely a historical event but an ongoing crisis.

"The Nakba never ended. Today we are witnessing the Israeli apartheid regime carry out genocide in Gaza. It is a campaign to erase Palestinians from existence," she stated in a press release.
The resolution highlights the continued displacement and suffering of Palestinians, citing actions such as the demolition of homes, revocation of residency rights, and denial of the right of return for refugees. It also criticizes US support for "Israel", labeling it as complicity in the ongoing oppression of Palestinians.
Tlaib's resolution has garnered support from several progressive lawmakers, including Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Cori Bush (D-MO), and André Carson (D-IN).
