Zelensky calls Russian delegation in Turkey 'phony' as Putin skips peace talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday described the Russian delegation in Turkey as “phony” after Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the expected peace talks.
Speaking at a press conference in Ankara following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelensky criticized the Russian delegation for lacking decision-making authority. “Why propose direct negotiations if you’re not willing to show up? This is not serious,” he said.
The Kremlin stated that Putin does not respond to ultimatums and that the Russian delegation was prepared for serious discussions. The delegation attended in Istanbul without Putin, whose participation had previously been considered.
Turkish President Erdogan expressed disappointment over the lack of direct engagement between the two leaders. “Direct dialogue between leaders is crucial for any meaningful resolution,” he said.
