Palestinian VP Al-Sheikh urges Hamas to disarm

Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh called on Hamas to relinquish its weapons and commit to the principle of “one authority, one legitimacy, and one weapon” as a prerequisite for Palestinian unity.

Sheikh confirmed that communication with Hamas is ongoing and described the current dialogue between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the movement as active, focusing on both political and administrative issues. He emphasized the need for Hamas to clarify its stance on joining the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), reiterating that national unity must be built on shared legitimacy.

“Our priority must be ensuring that Palestinians remain steadfast on their land and preventing any forced displacement,” he said.

Sheikh also commented on the deteriorating relationship with the Israeli Occupation, characterizing it as “nearly dead.” He stated bluntly, “There is no partner in Israel to achieve a just peace.” He criticized the current political framework — including the Oslo Accords — as having failed to meet Palestinian aspirations for statehood based on the 1967 borders.

His comments come as tensions persist between the PA and Hamas. The latter has previously condemned Al-Sheikh’s appointment as Vice President to President Mahmoud Abbas, calling it “a reinforcement of unilateralism and exclusion.”

Sheikh’s stance on disarmament and dialogue with "Israel" continues to stir debate within Palestinian society, where many voices are calling for democratic elections as a means of restoring national legitimacy and strengthening unity.
