The 'Israeli' army has announced an extension of compulsory military service by four months due to a growing manpower shortage, Hebrew media reported on Sunday.

According to the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), the extension comes as a result of heightened security challenges and aims to address the current shortfall in troops. The additional months will be classified as reserve duty, bringing the total service period to three years.

The report added that soldiers will now serve an additional four months, while pre-release leaves will be suspended, requiring soldiers to complete their full service before discharge.

Although the army has not yet confirmed the report, sources suggest the decision is meant to address the urgent need for troops, with the IOF currently facing a shortage of 10,000 personnel, including 7,000 in combat units.

This move comes amid 'Israel's' ongoing aggression on Gaza Strip, which has resulted in nearly 52,200 deaths, predominantly women and children, since October 2023.

The 'Israeli' government had previously attempted to pass legislation extending compulsory military service from two years and eight months to three years. However, the proposal faced strong opposition from ultra-Orthodox members of the coalition, who are seeking exemptions for their community in exchange for supporting the legislation. Ultra-Orthodox Jews, or Haredim, make up about 13 percent of 'Israel's' population.
