'Israeli' drones kill two in Lebanon, including senior Islamic Group member
The death toll from two 'Israeli' drone strikes on Tuesday in Lebanon's southern and Mount Lebanon regions has risen to two, including a senior member of the Islamic Group, Hussein Izzat Mohammad Atwi, according to official sources.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that one person was killed in an 'Israeli' airstrike on the town of Al-Haniyah in the Tyre district of the South Governorate. The Lebanese National News Agency confirmed that the drone targeted a pickup truck and a motorcycle, causing additional injuries.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health had announced that an 'Israeli' strike on the town of Baawarta in the Aley district of Mount Lebanon resulted in one death. The Lebanese Civil Defense said in a statement that fire and rescue teams responded at 9:10 AM to extinguish a fire that broke out in a vehicle hit by an 'Israeli' drone. The fire spread to nearby grassland along the Baawarta road.
In related developments, the Islamic Group in Lebanon mourned the death of their leader, Hussein Izzat Mohammad Atwi. The group claimed that "the Zionist hand of treachery" assassinated him in a targeted drone strike as he traveled from his home in Baawarta to his workplace in Beirut.
The group condemned the assassination, calling it a "cowardly crime."
'Israel' later confirmed responsibility for the targeted killing of Atwi, stating that the strike occurred in the Naameh area of Mount Lebanon. The 'Israeli' military said in a statement that the attack killed Hussein Izzat Mohammad Atwi, accusing him of involvement in planning and promoting hostile activities against 'Israel' from Lebanese territory, including targeting 'Israeli' military forces on the northern border.
The 'Israeli' army further alleged that Atwi had previously launched rocket attacks on infrastructure in northern 'Israel' and attempted to infiltrate 'Israeli' territory. They also claimed that Attawi worked closely with Hamas in Lebanon.
The Lebanese government has yet to respond to 'Israel’s' statement.
