Just one day before his passing, Pope Francis made a final public appeal for peace, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during a brief Easter Sunday appearance from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.

In a message read aloud by an aide, the 88-year-old pontiff condemned the “deplorable humanitarian situation” in Gaza and urged both sides to end hostilities. He appealed for the release of captives and for urgent aid to reach Palestinians, describing them as “a starving people that aspires to peace.” He also denounced rising anti-Semitism and expressed solidarity with both Palestinians and 'Israelis.'

The appearance marked his final public words before his death on Monday morning, April 21, 2025, at his residence in Vatican City. The Vatican has not disclosed the exact cause of death, though the Pope had been recovering from a respiratory illness and pneumonia.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, was elected in 2013 and became the first Latin American and Jesuit pope. His 12-year papacy was defined by humility, compassion, and a strong commitment to social justice, environmental protection, and reform within the Church.

The College of Cardinals will soon convene a conclave to elect his successor.
