China has escalated the ongoing trade conflict with the United States by increasing tariffs on US goods to 84%, in retaliation for new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

This move, effective April 10, further intensifies tensions between the world's two largest economies.

The Chinese government confirmed the new tariff rates in a statement released on Wednesday, just as Trump’s latest tariffs took effect earlier that day in Beijing, pushing the cumulative tariff rate for US goods in China to 104 percent for the year, starting April 9th.

In a bold response to the US actions, China had previously warned that it would “fight to the end” if the US continued to impose new tariffs. This comes as Chinese exports already face extensive levies imposed by both Trump’s first term and the Biden administration, in addition to the blanket tariffs introduced this year.

To further retaliate, China has added six more firms to its "unreliable entity list," which targets businesses considered to be a threat to national security. Additionally, 12 US entities were added to China's export control list, tightening restrictions on their operations in the country.

Initially, President Trump had justified a 34 percent tariff hike on Chinese goods as a means of leveling the playing field, citing barriers that Beijing had in place against US companies.

However, tensions only deepened as China retaliated with its own levies, contributing to the ongoing economic standoff.
