'Israeli' attack kills five in southern Syria despite EU warning
At least five civilians were killed in an 'Israeli' shelling attack in southern Syria's Deraa province on Tuesday, local authorities reported, amid rising tensions in the region.
The attack follows airstrikes in southern Lebanon that killed one person on Monday, adding to the ongoing violence despite calls from European Union foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, for restraint to avoid further escalation in the region.
The provincial authorities reported the civilian casualties in a statement on Telegram, stating that the shelling targeted the town of Kuwayya, located west of Deraa.
Residents in the area were forced to flee due to the intense 'Israeli' tank shelling. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also confirmed the death of four civilians in the same region due to the shelling.
Earlier in the day, the 'Israeli' military announced it had carried out strikes on two airbases in Syria’s Homs province, targeting what it described as "remaining military capabilities."
However, the 'Israeli' army did not confirm any shelling in southern Syria. The attacks come amid heightened concerns about the potential for regional instability, particularly as 'Israeli' forces continue their offensive in Syria.
The violence in southern Syria follows 'Israeli' airstrikes on military targets in Lebanon and Syria, including a deadly strike in southern Lebanon on Monday night, which marked a significant increase in 'Israeli' military activity in the region.
Despite EU warnings urging a de-escalation, 'Israel' has maintained its operations, claiming they are necessary to protect its security. Kaja Kallas, during her visit to Jerusalem, reiterated the risk posed by the escalating attacks, warning that the continued military strikes could further destabilize the already volatile region.
In response to the latest wave of attacks, the 'Israeli' military confirmed strikes on Syrian airbases in Tadmur (Palmyra) and T4, located about 50 kilometers west of Palmyra. These attacks targeted military infrastructure, and 'Israeli' officials have stated that they were responding to threats posed by ongoing hostile actions from Syria.
The escalating violence in Syria and Lebanon raises concerns about the broader implications for regional peace and stability, as international efforts to mediate and calm the situation remain elusive.
