Bahrain launched its first locally designed and developed satellite, Al-Munther, on Saturday, marking a major step forward in the country's growing space ambitions.

The project, led by the National Space Science Agency (NSSA), represents a significant milestone in Bahrain's journey toward becoming a key player in space technology. Al-Munther, a 3U CubeSat, is notable for being the first satellite in the region to feature artificial intelligence for onboard image processing, setting a new technological benchmark.

Equipped with cutting-edge payloads, the satellite includes an Earth observation camera, a robust cybersecurity system, and an innovative broadcast function. This unique feature will allow Al-Munther to transmit Bahrain’s national anthem and a special message from King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa from space.

The satellite will orbit at a sun-synchronous altitude of 550 km and is expected to remain operational for two years. It will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Launch Complex in California.

Named "Al Munther," meaning “herald” or “messenger” in Arabic, the satellite symbolizes Bahrain's forward-looking vision and unwavering commitment to advancing its space infrastructure. It also aims to inspire future generations to pursue careers in science and technology, while fostering research and innovation in space exploration.
