Amman has recently experienced severe traffic congestion, coinciding with the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

There has been a noticeable increase in traffic on major roads, especially just before iftar.

This congestion is attributed to the numerous movements citizens make for various purposes, such as shopping and purchasing Ramadan necessities, leading to a buildup of vehicles in many areas.

Reports indicate that peak hours see the highest levels of congestion between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM, right before iftar, causing significant delays in reaching different destinations. This congestion affects main roads like Mecca Street, Jordan Street, and King Abdullah II Street, as well as busy commercial areas like downtown.

- Traffic alerts for citizens -

  • Avoid driving during peak hours: It is advised to avoid traveling during peak hours between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM to prevent delays due to congestion.
  • Use alternative routes: It is preferable to use secondary or alternative roads such as Prince Hassan Street and Al-Tayaran Street to reduce waiting times.
  • Prioritize planning: If there is a necessity to shop or visit crowded areas, it is recommended to go early or after iftar to avoid congestion.
  • Follow traffic laws: To help improve traffic flow, drivers are advised to fully comply with traffic signals and instructions from security personnel at congested locations.
  • Use public transportation: In some cases, using public transport or apps designed to identify the fastest available routes can help avoid traffic jams.

These traffic crises occur at a sensitive time, as the pressure on Amman's road network increases due to the coincidence of the holy month with heavy citizen movement, requiring everyone’s cooperation to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize congestion as much as possible.
