Guterres warns US aid cuts may have devastating global impact
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of the "devastating" impact of Washington’s decision to cut foreign aid, arguing that such measures undermine US interests.
He stressed that scaling back America's humanitarian role could weaken its global influence and urged the US to reconsider after a thorough review.
The Trump administration recently announced significant cuts to foreign aid, reducing USAID funding by 92 percent. The administration claims the move will save taxpayers approximately USD 60 billion.
The US has historically been the largest provider of humanitarian aid, supporting crisis-affected regions such as Gaza, Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine.
This funding helps deliver food, water, healthcare, shelter, and education to millions in need.
Upon taking office, Trump signed an executive order freezing all US foreign aid for 90 days to reassess spending policies.
